Dilworth Home Tour 2008

Submitted by: Ann Willey
Date: 7/2008

The 36th Annual Dilworth Home Tour will be held Friday evening, September 12 from 6-9 pm and Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 10 am-4 pm. This year's tour, which has a long tradition of celebrating the beauty and historical integrity of homes in one of Charlotte's oldest neighborhoods and its very first suburb, features 8 Dilworth homes and 3 businesses.

The 2008 Home Tour showcases a broad spectrum of home styles mixing older, traditional homes that have been elegantly preserved with historic homes that have undergone modern interior renovations and adaptations. There are also some new homes on the tour which demonstrate that historic architecture does not mean sacrificing contemporary styles and features. See below for a complete list of homes.

Home Tour Garden Stop: 810 Berkeley Ave.

Be sure to enjoy a glass of lemonade by the pool and spa at the magical backyard garden stop on this year's tour!
John and Alicia Gaul's Berkeley Avenue home was on the tour in 1999; some might remember the goldfish floating in the pedestal sink in the kitchen on that stop. Since the home's interior was open for touring, the Gaul’s have completely transformed their back yard. The garage was torn down and replaced with a pergola breezeway that leads to a colorful screened pagoda. You will find yourself in the midst of a lush perennial garden with a brightly painted storage shed and a collection of hand-painted bird houses scattered throughout the yard; a perfect setting for a beautiful pool and spa complete with waterfall. As one neighbor said, "When I open the gate I feel as if I am going from Kansas to the Land of Oz!"............more.

If you haven't purchased advance tickets for the Dilworth Home Tour, you want to buy one here. If you are already ticketed, stroll down the block after touring the 723 Berkeley home, for a refreshing pause: have a seat, sip on a cool drink, and enjoy the view!

1400 Scott Ave., Sponsored by: Fryday & Doyne is a Dilworth grown architectural and interior design firm, now based in Southend. Completing both residential and commercial projects throughout Dilworth, Charlotte, and the region, they see the charm and scale of Dilworth as a model for their work and image of what an ideal neighborhood can be. Fryday & Doyne is proud to sponsor the Dilworth Home Tour which raises money for the fine works of the Dilworth Community Development Association.
2923 South Tryon Street, Suite 320 Charlotte, North Carolina 28203 Ph. 704-372-0001, Fax. 704-372-2517 www.fryday-doyne.com

Since its opening in 1985, the mission of Hospitality House has been to provide a “home away from home” for out-of-town family members of patients in local hospitals.  Located in Dilworth at 1400 Scott Avenue, Hospitality House enables families to be together while their loved ones are in the hospital.  Guests are relieved emotionally and financially as Hospitality House provides a safe place to stay at no cost.  Hospitality House has welcomed guests from 24 countries, 49 states and 92 North Carolina counties.  In October 2006, our new house was started to consolidate the organization under one roof.  With the help of architect and interior designer, Fryday and Doyne, and builder, Cox-Schepp, we opened our new house on February 26, 2008 with the first guests staying on March 2.  Vendors and craftspeople from all over North Carolina participated in building and furnishing the house. Even with the expanded space offered by the new home, it operates at capacity.

As a nonprofit organization, Hospitality House is continually seeking the support of the Charlotte community.  Volunteers staff the house daily, and provide the “welcome” that guests so desperately need after traveling to Charlotte and having a loved one admitted to a hospital.  Hospitality House reaches out to the community for your donations, whether it is a donation of your time, your gardening or handyman skills, or your financial support.  Be sure to visit Hospitality House during the Home Tour and learn more about how you can become part of our family at Hospitality House – sheltering families in medical crisis.  To learn more about us, please visit HospitalityHouseofCharlotte.org or call us at 704-376-0060.  We look forward to seeing you in our new home!

Daniel Bayless

In the tradition of the great impressionists of the 19th century, San Francisco artist Daniel Bayless records the most subtle sensations of light, those ephemeral particles that engage the senses, calling to mind early mornings when patios are perfumed by delicate blooms, awake and dancing in the sun. His harbor scenes capture those quiet moments when the bay, capable of rage and mystery, is still and at peace.

Bayless observes the natural elements of a scene. Using powerful brushwork and luminosity, he arranges them within the frame of his canvas in such a manner that the viewer experiences the focused energy and spontaneity apparent in each scene. "I want to evoke the feeling of what a scene means to me when I look at it," Bayless says. "The vitality of color, the energy of the relationship of the viewer and the subject, whether it’s a vibrating, sunny landscape or a still controlled interior; those are the messages that are important to me."

Painting is not the only passion in Bayless’ life. He is an accomplished jewelry designer. After attending the University of Arizona, Bayless left for New York, where he completed his degree at the Abbey School for Jewelry and Art Metal Design. He was apprenticed to Maurice Galli, head designer of the prestigious Fifth Avenue firm of Harry Winston.

Bayless’ paintings are included in both private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Mexico, England, Hong Kong and Japan. His collectors include such luminaries as Elizabeth Taylor and the late Leonard Bernstein. His corporate collectors include: The Disney Corporation, Omni Hotels, The Breakers, Moore & Van Allen, and MCrowd Dallas.

Artiste Winery in California selected two of Bayless’ paintings for two of their 2008 wine labels which were released during May, 2008.   www.danielbayless.com (.pdf)

Elder Gallery, a well-established fine art gallery located in Charlotte’s Historic SouthEnd (www.elderart.com), is committed to presenting the finest quality and widest selection of original artwork at fair and reasonable prices.  The gallery is dedicated to assisting the new enthusiast as well as corporate and experienced private collectors. Metropolitan Design on South

1719 South Blvd.

-a collaborative showroom and market of custom cabinetry and antiques

Rooney Robison Antiques and Metropolitan Kitchen and Bath have joined forces to create a unique showroom and shop in historic Dilworth’s South End.  The two principals, Dominick Ristaino and Rooney Robison, instinctively understood each other when they first met.  Both have a keen eye for design and appreciate craftsmanship, carpentry, and architecture. ...

Ristaino and Robison believe South End, and historic Dilworth, is the ideal location for their new venture and are excited to host the Dilworth Home Tour’s Friday night wine tasting.  As Ristaino points out, “This building was once a fourplex residence built in the 1920’s and you can still see the original slate roof and the steps of the front porch.  When Weather’s Furniture Company started at this location in 1949, the downstairs section was added.  Weather’s Furniture, operated by Bob and Gene Weathers, was in business for almost 50 years.”  This tour is about history and neighbors and Metropolitan Kitchen and Bath and Rooney Robison Antiques are eager to promote both.

2007: Dilworth Home Tour and Jubilee

Historically, Home Tour and Jubilee have been held the 2nd weekend in August along with the 8K sponsored by Charlotte Running Company.  In an effort to lighten the load on volunteers who wish to volunteer or attend both events as well as to expand each event, the Home Tour and Jubilee will occur on different dates this year.  The Home Tour will be held September 14 – 15; giving Dilworth a fun event between Greek fest and the Freedom Park Festival.  The Jubilee will celebrate its 36th year (Charlotte’s longest running festival) on October 20.   These events are opportunities to showcase our lovely neighborhood, spend time with your neighbors, and raise funds for the community.
